Project Overview: Transformative project, which centered on the development of the University of Lapland’s Industrial Design Programme. Utilizing innovative service design methodologies and co-design principles, the goal was to bring about a fundamental shift in the program’s structure and functionality. We aimed to redefine the program’s content, enhance its visibility in comparison to similar offerings, and establish partnerships that would strengthen its impact.
Project Goals: Our mission was grounded in the following key objectives:
- Program Enhancement: Reimagining the program’s curriculum and content to better cater to the needs of students and the evolving design industry.
- Increased Visibility: Elevating the Industrial Design Programme’s profile in the educational landscape, ensuring that it stands out among similar programs.
- Building Partnerships: Cultivating new collaborations and partnerships to enrich the student experience and expand the program’s reach.
Methodology: We employed service design techniques and actively engaged in co-design, drawing upon the invaluable perspectives of current students, partners, and other stakeholders closely associated with the education program.
Key Milestones:
- Research and Needs Assessment:
- Conducted thorough research to understand the program’s strengths and areas for improvement.
- Gathered insights from students, partners, and other stakeholders through surveys and interviews.
- Co-Design Workshops:
- Organized collaborative workshops with program stakeholders to brainstorm and co-create potential solutions.
- Encouraged participants to share their unique perspectives and experiences to inform the project.
- Proposal Development:
- Formulated a comprehensive proposal that encompassed significant changes to the Industrial Design Programme.
- Recommendations included the development of a new curriculum, identity workshops, a shift towards project-based learning, collaboration with alumni and industry experts, and a fresh approach to internships.
Results: Our efforts culminated in a transformative proposal for the Industrial Design Programme at the University of Lapland. This proposal not only aligns the program with current industry trends but also reflects the voices and needs of its students, partners, and stakeholders.
While our project laid the groundwork for these changes and received a positive response, the final implementation of the proposed improvements remained a collaborative endeavor involving the University of Lapland. The decision to implement these recommendations is contingent on the university’s approval and subsequent actions.
